A New Friend

Yesterday, while the little one and I were at the park behind our house, she found this little guy hanging out on a weed, munching on a leaf.

She was thrilled to have found a caterpillar, exclaiming “Mommy, I found nature!” upon the discovery. We took it home and put it in a little bug jar (we keep one on hand for such occasions) with some of the weed trimmings for a snack. After doing a bit of research, I found out that our new little friend will turn into this butterfly.

Late last night, the caterpillar begin the process of turning in to a cocoon. This will be the first time we get to watch the Chrysalis cycle up close. If you google time lapse photos & videos of the process, it’s really interesting and kinda creepy. Caterpillars don’t build a cocoon, like I had thought. They actually shed their skin and become a cocoon. The whole thing is pretty mind blowing & makes me realize how awesome and astounding nature & life can be. Hopefully in a few weeks, a brand new butterfly will be emerging from it’s shell! We are all pretty excited at the possibility & the opportunity to watch it first-hand.

Starting Over

About a month ago, I wrote about the pretty green sprouts growing in my garden. Everything I had planted was coming along nicely & I was sure I would be harvesting delicious things in no time. I must have jinxed myself, because shortly after I was attacked by nature. Grubs & worms ate my lettuce, spinach and tomato sprouts. The basil stopped growing. But the zucchini & cilantro seemed fine. After doing some research on organic gardening forums & some advice from the mr.’s co-worker, I brewed up a pest spray. I used onion, garlic & chili flake with water & added a little Meyer’s dish soap.

This is what happened…

Everything that was left, died. Except for the cilantro it seems. The little plants are pretty resilient. Even the bugs leave it alone. Needles to say, I am really bummed. I was looking forward to growing a successful garden & having lots of good organic veggies on hand. But don’t think I am giving up. I am replanting this weekend with new veggies – summer produce since it is getting warmer. Just like everything else in life, gardening is a learning experience. I made mistakes & will try not to repeat them. So, fingers crossed & positive thoughts!
